Legal Aid for Jurors

Publicly Funded Legal Aid

Legal Aid Ontario offers toll-free advice on employment leave, summons compliance, and travel-expense disputes. Income thresholds shift yearly—test your status in seconds with our Legal Aid Eligibility Checker.

Duty Counsel at Court

Every courthouse has “duty counsel” lawyers who provide free, same-day guidance about workplace disputes, accommodation requests, and hardship letters. They cannot discuss trial evidence—maintaining your impartiality is paramount.

Community Legal Clinics

  • 70+ clinics across Ontario—phone appointments available for rural jurors.
  • Interpretation in 140 languages provided free of charge.
  • Call 1-800-668-8258 or use LAO’s clinic locator to book.

When Private Counsel Makes Sense

Complex employment contracts, self-employment income risks, or professional-licence issues may justify hiring private counsel. Many firms now offer fixed-fee “juror bundles” that include an employer letter citing the Employment Standards Act and follow-up calls.

Support Services for Jurors

  • Ontario 211 Helpline: dial 2-1-1 for 24/7 referrals to mental-health, housing, and financial aid.
  • CMHA Mental Health: 1-866-531-2600 — confidential counselling sessions.
  • Court Accessibility Coordinator: email accessibility@ontario.ca five days in advance.
  • Employer Liaison Office: 1-800-531-5551 — mediates jury-leave disputes.
  • Child-Care Subsidy Info: contact your municipal Social Services office for short-term assistance.

Free debrief sessions with a registered social worker are available after difficult testimony. Request a referral through the bailiff; sessions are confidential and never delay proceedings.

Courts must make reasonable accommodations—ASL interpretation, assistive listening devices, mobility aids. Submit Form 33B or email the coordinator early to avoid delays.

If statutory juror pay and employer leave still leave you short, ask the trial judge (through the foreperson) about hardship reviews. In rare cases additional allowances are authorised.

Quick FAQ

Mileage reimbursement applies only to personal vehicle use. If you ride transit, keep fare receipts; courts reimburse the lower of actual fare or equivalent mileage allowance. Full rules appear in our compensation guide.

Ontario's Employment Standards Act forbids retaliation for jury duty. You can file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour and notify the Jury Office. Our employer guide explains next steps.

Menus vary. If you have strict dietary needs, pack your own lunch—security allows food in sealed containers. Ask the bailiff about fridge access or arrange special meals if deliberations run overnight.
